Currently, we investigate the mechanisms involved with loss of function and death of pancreatic beta cells in response to different stress conditions. We do our studies in cell lines and animal models in different periods of life (fetal, neonatal and pregnancy). More specifically, we study the following topics related to beta cells: signaling pathways involved in control of function and cell mass; endoplasmic reticulum stress; inflammatory pathways; oxidative stress; possible beneficial effects of treatments with hormones and peptides.
